Under the Tuscan Rain!!

Hello everyone I am writing this blog from possibly the most beautiful hotel room i have ever been in!! Sam is in heaven, let me try to describe it to you, firstly the entire first floor is exlusive Tuscan suites around 16 I think so you enter through a special secure door into your private lounge which has food and drink replenished all day ( we have just returned from champagne fruit and nibbles washed down with Perrier water ) you then access your suite which has a King size bed massive wardrobe and sitting area a writing desk a bureau with mini bar and TV and a fabulous bathroom with toilet and separate Bidet large bath and shower and double hand basin shelf all in marble of course, the bed has a velvet hanging pelmet over the top with lots of brass and the ceiling has the mandatory massive wooden beams ( Sandra is nagging me to say that she would like a dress made from the curtain material ) so it is exactly what she was hoping for here in Tuscony and has fulfilled her dream.
Now to tell you of our trip from Venice!! It all began well with Fabio picking us up at 7.30 and taking our bags down to the Rialto bridge where the water buses leave from, we asked the Concierge for his advice on what bus to take for our car pick up and he was magnifico!! put us about 50m from the office, now Sammy had forgotten to read the paperwork and had forgotten that we werent supposed to pick up the car until 10.30 mmmmm It is Italy and the Dude said eh itsa ok itsa ready to go now anyway!! so off we went after programming Narelle to get us to Verona and on to Juliets House, mmm we dont have an address that Narelle likes no matter just punch in Verona and away we go, oooooppss right hand side Ralfy must remember that!! got to Verona and could quite happily had a Valium and a lie down as the stress levels were in overload and the concentration required to drive the narrow city steets on the right hand side whilst listening to Narelle who im sure had as much idea as me of where we were going!
We did finally get to the little city in Verona and to her house which for me was a little dissapointing however the puppy dog look in Sammys eyes told me it was another dream come true for her, i did manage to get a handful of Juliet's right breast ( considered to give you good luck in love " Heres Hoping " ) so the trip wasnt a total bust mmm interesting choice of words.
Then onto the long trip to Florence or Firenza as it is known here, our hotel is in the middle of the old city and can only be accessed by licence ( Which the hotel gives you ) but the pathetic map we had and Narelles growing intransagence became a real problem as we got hopelessly lost and had to resort to phoning the hotel and having them talk us in, we were very stressed when we arrived but after a shower and the Champagne we are felling a little better, I have also spoken with the Concierge and i now have maps that i can follow and easy ways in and out as well as launderette details so we are about to head out into beautful Florence walk our cars route in and out of the city and find the Launderette as well as having a little dinner.
Walking day through Florence tomorrow and relaxing prior to a trip to Pisa on Wednesday, ok I know it reads like a novel but it has been very Cartharthic to write out the day, sorry if it was boring i will try to do better tomorrow!!
Love and miss you all Ralf, Sam, and MM xxx

  1. Good Morning! All I can say is dudes and sweets to cover the whole blog! I am sure you had more than one champagne to write so descriptively and with so many adjectives!

The room sounds wonderful. We were in about the same area as you - just a little more towards to river though from what you describe. Ours was Hotel Aprille and yes - the experience of driving in the old city - was as I described to you this morning on Skype - very stressful!

Have a wonderful day - love the photo's. Alex sends love. She is just in morning rounds - didn't get to read first thing but she said she would leave a blog later on!

I will write a separate response with all the left over hints and tips of where to go and what to do in the treasure hunt?

    Lots of love

  2. Hmm not much point in putting Verona on the list but here goes anyway.

Verona - apart from the obvious - something Julietish and then the recommendations were to have Canelloni. You can still do this from your hotel. If you ask the concierge where the best canelloni is in the city - not for tourists - somewhere where the locals eat - you won't get led astray.

Bologna - something churchy - remember it has to go in the frame. We love crosses of any sort - but go nuts. Now for the recommendations - go to Piazza Magiorre - obviously you will have come across this in every town that you've visited - but this one is worth the photo's. For Pizza - go to Vito's which is right next to Madonna di San Lucca - simple, amazing and cheap. It goes really well with Aqua Frizannte - which is just fizzy water - but the combo is Bellisimo.

Pisa - how could you go past a leaning tower of some discription. Then for the recommendations - now - the tower is in the old city - and I mean old. You have to park outside the walls. Heaps and heaps of parking - and then get through the old town walls - you will see signs and or people going towards the direction you need. The closer you get to Pisa from the highway - the less obvious the tower becomes! Oh - and Ralf - you are right about Burano - I had totally forgotten that - just looked at our photos and it is massively crooked!

Sienna - a flag or something horsey from the races that are held in the round. Recommendations - go to one of the restaurants or cafes near the round where the races are held. Enjoy the amazing array of people that come from far and wide to look at this scene. Some of the best Gelati is here - you will need it in this hot weather!

Milan - of course something from the Duomo! Recommendations - visit the railway station - very amazing. Find a Risottaalla Milanese - usually a saffron risotto accompanied by osso bucco. I would however recommend sharing. We had one between us both and we still had left overs.

That is it - over and out!

  3. Hmm - I have been trying to post this comment for a little while - looks like my lovely wife is using our password at the moment. so waiting waiting waiting....

Hey there Sim Sam & Ralf - what wonderful photo's. I have to say - Verona wasn't really my cup of tea. So much so that I went dress shopping - so yu know how much it really wasn't me! But Sim Sam - so glad that it was everything you wanted. I really really wanted to go until I got there.

Looks like MM is partying hard and chatting up all and sundry... you know you just can't trust that little one..... must be something to do with the brown nose..... at least though he just pinches alcohol and not the butter!

I don't know if I got to tell you - I think I was waiting to chat to you on Skype - but the house is looking great. Gerv is doing a wonderful job. You should see Boo Boo - if Gerv is painting on the ground - there is Boo flat out beside him just keeping him company!

I feel your pain about the drive into Florence. After our stop at Assisi which was our first lesson in driving fast and on the wrong side and down narrow streets - Firenze was next. Our map was good - and Trish managed to get us to our hotel within moments of being in the city - except we overshot it by about 900 mts down a one way road. Well - no probs - I will just do a blocky......... never, never, never again. Three hours later, not loos and having drunk nearly two litres of water and gone to three toilets that were shut - I was shattered and close to tears. We drove around the Magiorre or whatever is the green and white marble structure at least 5 times into places where there was only supposed to be pedestrians, we were lost. Trish finally got us about 3 roads away and so we parked on a side road. Locked the car and walked to the hotel. Trish checked us in and thank goodness there was a loo in the waiting area. I just pee'd and pee'd and pee'd. Trish had done all our paperwork, had enrolled for the night time walk, worked out maps, worked out dinner and was sitting in the waiting area when I finally came out. She had the concierge draw us a map for how to get the car where we wanted to go. So - we checked into our room - top floor - massive massive room. Canopied beds, beautiful old wardrobes with engraving - a massive bathroom which was bigger than some of the hotel rooms that we had stayed in! It must be something about Florenze! I remember too - we had these wonderful wooden shutters that opened out onto the street. So after a quick look around - back to the car for us and Trish got us to the parking station and our two little little bags that we had still at that stage (we only had those two little cabin luggage bags with us still - Florence was where we bought the Samsonite bags) we went back to the room. So - I collapsed and stayed collapsed! Trish organised all our laundry - found a place for us to eat - I still hadn't left the room......... and finally coaxed me out into the night - and you have seen the resultant picture of the Litre beer!! So I feel your pain!

Well must go - got more patients to see.

    Lots of love
    Alex

  5. Hi Miss Sandra,

J2 have just caught up with reading your blog.

We liked the picture of the puppy peeking out of the blue bag. Everybody laughed.

We liked the different coloured buildings and the boats.

We have finished our assessment now and are looking forward to the end of term. Our paper planes were good.

Tomorrow we are going to try to make popcorn float to the ceiling.

    We miss you!

Love from J2, Fiona and Kerryn
